New York Bagel Manufacturer Finds One Solution to Protect Bakery Floors from Freezer and Oven
Wall, NJ (PRWEB) July 26, 2013 -- Garon Products recently repaired and resurfaced eroded concrete bakery floors in a Long Island bagel production facility with a thermal shock resistant floor coating that was subject to extreme heat and cold due to the facility’s various operations.
Affected floor areas beneath an oven and in a blast freezer; two operations that cause opposite conditions. Beneath the oven, boiling water blasting under pressure at 214°F from the oven kettle as well as exposure to extreme heat from baking operations weakened the concrete floor down to the underlying aggregate. In the freezer room, standing water on the floor due to thawing ice from wash-downs with water at 65-70°F contributed to the erosion process and exposed aggregate as well.
Garon specified a cement urethane resurfacer [Mortarthane™ HF] to repair the previously untreated floor because it can hold up to thermal shock and heavy impacts—an epoxy coating would not have worked as well. Because the product’s urethane content has a similar coefficient rate of expansion as concrete, it “breathes” at the same rate as the concrete substrate and is best suited for the facility’s operational needs and temperature fluctuations. And because the floor is in a bakery production facility, an antimicrobial floor was a must-have.
The Mortarthane™ HF solution achieved the facility’s goals for a sturdy, temperature-resistant floor that could stand up to impacts and offer superior hygienic qualities.
This coating has very low odor with no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) so it adheres to compliance standards for clean flooring set forth by the United States Food and Drug Administration, Department of Agriculture and Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Best of all, it protects the floor against both extreme temperature variations.
Working beneath the oven was no easy task, as it only allowed 18 inches of room from its base to the floor. The crew had to lie beneath it to resurface and coat the floor. As for the freezer, the crew resurfaced the concrete to its original condition by applying Mortarthane™ HF. Next, the same urethane coating was applied in the oven room. Prior to coating the floor, a non-shrinking epoxy urethane hybrid joint filler [Joint Guard™] was used to fill the joints and seal the edges.
The entire project took about 32 hours and caused only minimal disruptions to the facility’s daily production.
