New York Car Accident Lawyer Adnan Munawar Weighs-in on State Plan to Enhance Thruway Safety
(PRWEB) December 15, 2013 -- CBS News reported that the State of New York has announced its implementation of a new, high-tech means of trying to reduce the number of wrong-way thruway crashes. (N.Y. State Announces Plan to Fight Wrong-Way Thruway Crashes, December 4, 2013). In 2012 alone, there were 17 deaths and 15 accidents on the Thruway in 2012, and while those numbers reflect the safest year to date according to Governor Andrew Cuomo, the State is working to make the Thruway even safer.
The safety system being put in place uses Doppler radar, flashy LED signs, and cell phone text alerts to warn drivers that they are heading the wrong way. Doppler radar will be used to detect vehicles driving in the wrong direction, which will then trigger a flashing LED sign to alert the driver to pull over and turn around when he or she can do so safely. Other drivers and local will be alerted as well that there is a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction. Governor Cuomo and other officials welcomed the new system, noting that New York is the first state to use this technology to enhance traffic safety that is designed to save lives.
“It is heartening to see our State government taking vehicle safety seriously and coming up with new, modern ways of making our roads even safer,” said Adnan Munawar, Partner at Munawar & Andrews-Santillo LLP. “When a car drives the wrong way down a road, particularly at night and in inclement conditions, it creates a potentially deadly hazard for everyone. Hopefully this new technology will make drivers more aware of a very serious danger and will allow them to avoid a fatal accident.”
“While everyone should welcome the additional warnings of wrong-way drivers that the State is implementing, they should also be reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance at all times they are on the road. This is a new technology and drivers will potentially need to get accustomed to interacting with it. Sadly, while this technology seems destined to save lives, there will still likely be accidents that cause injuries and fatalities. If you or a loved one is unfortunate enough to be in an auto accident, you may have the right to financial compensation to pay for your medical bills, pain and suffering, and potentially other losses. If you think you may have a claim and wish to pursue it, you should contact a lawyer right away to find out how to proceed.
