Bloomberg turned a ceremonial wheel in City Hall Park and opened the spigot for the Manhattan section of the gigantic tunnel. Planning for the project began in 1950, and work got under way in 1970. The water tunnel will be a backup to the city’s principal water tunnel. It will allow 350 million gallons of water to flow beneath the city each day. The tunnel’s completion also will allow engineers to inspect and significantly repair Tunnel No. 1 for the first time since its opening in 1917, The New York Times said.
Twenty-four people died during the tunnel’s construction, reported The New York Times. No tunnel worker was killed on the job since 1997.
Sandhogs are responsible for building the tunnels that run underground. This job is very dangerous due to the nature of the work, hazardous materials, heavy machinery, and the locations of the work performed.
“When construction site contractors or owners fail to take all the necessary precautions to make sure the jobsite is safe for workers, they may be held liable for injuries and deaths that result,” said Perecman.
A 10 1/2-mile section connecting Brooklyn and Queens is scheduled to be completed in 2021. The tunnel will stretch for more than 60 miles, from reservoirs north of the city to Brooklyn and Queens, said The New York Times. The city has committed $4.7 billion on the project to date.
