New York ENT and Facial Plastic Surgeon's Treatment Prevents Chronic Sinusitis
Newburgh, New York (PRWEB) June 19, 2015 -- Dr. Ran Y. Rubinstein is one of a small group of surgeons in the United States to offer Propel, an innovative treatment for people who suffer from chronic sinusitis. Inserted directly into the sinus mucosa, Propel is designed to break the cycle of repetitive sinusitis through continuous, controlled corticosteroid delivery. Dr. Rubinstein’s Propel patients can see a better outcome, and improved long-term results, over those receiving traditional sinus surgery, alone.
Propel is a spring-like device, created specifically to be inserted into the sinus cavity, itself. As the piece props open the ethmoid sinus, it gradually releases an anti-inflammatory medication directly to the affected tissues, decreasing swelling and inflammation. When left untreated, these issues often lead to future infections. Propel’s drug-delivery mechanism minimizes the chance for further sinus obstruction, therefore reducing the need for additional, long-term steroidal medications or sinus surgery.
Prior to the administration of Propel, a balloon sinuplasty must first be performed. During the outpatient procedure, performed under local anesthesia, Dr. Rubinstein will dilate the blocked sinus passages with a balloon. Next, using extremely thin tubing, the coiled Propel device is gently inserted into the sinus cavity. The procedure takes about an hour to complete, and can be performed in Dr. Rubinstein’s office.
Since the administration of Propel does not require any incisions, there is little chance for scarring or other complications to occur. Patients are ready to resume normal activities immediately. Over the following 30 days, the Propel device will naturally dissolve; there is no need for removal. As the medication is released, the patient’s chronic sinusitis symptoms are eliminated. A Propel implant may be inserted multiple times a year, as symptoms warrant.
Andy Loyer is one of Dr. Rubinstein’s patients, and has been struggling with chronic sinusitis for over 15 years. Like most of the 35 million Americans who suffer from chronic sinus infections, Loyer’s symptoms have included sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, and headaches. Wanting to break the cycle, he recently saw Dr. Rubinstein to receive the Propel sinus implant. Since his surgery, Loyer reports a clear reduction in his symptoms. “Now, I wake up in the morning and (there is) no headache; I really am enjoying life so much more,” Loyer explains.
