New York Personal Injury Lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm Comments on Nationwide Sweep to Shut Down Unsafe Bus Lines
New York, N.Y (PRWEB) December 27, 2013 -- Safety regulators with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) have shut down 52 bus lines after detecting a number of safety violations during a major nationwide sweep. According to a Dec. 12 Associated Press news report, the agency began scrutinizing 250 companies with poor safety records out of the 4,000 or so interstate bus companies it regulates. The agency conducted "Operation Quick Strike" by training and dispersing 50 inspectors around the country to detect serious safety violations that could put the traveling public in jeopardy, according to the article.
Out of more than 1,300 buses that were inspected, 340 were taken off the road, at least temporarily, the report stated. Most were closed for safety problems including companywide failures of maintenance and violations of federal hours-of-service rules that limit how long a driver can work without a break, the AP article said. In one instance, drivers for a Utah company worked the more than 800-mile round trip between Salt Lake City and Las Vegas without rest, according to the report. In another case, a tour bus company ran one bus for several days even after a warning light indicated that there were problems with the anti-lock braking system, the report stated.
New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm said this report highlights the importance of frequent bus safety inspections. "It is unreasonable to expect these bus companies to police themselves. We've seen too many recent accidents where lives have been lost due to blatant safety violations."
Bus accidents can cause serious personal injuries and fatalities, Wilhelm said. "We have represented clients who have suffered permanent injuries and disabilities as a result of bus accidents. These are individuals who have been unable to return to work, earn a livelihood or live normal lives after the accident. Their lives are changed forever."
Anyone who has been in a bus accident would be well advised to take certain steps that will help protect their rights later, Wilhelm said. "It is important if you are involved in a bus accident to get important details including the driver's name and license information, contact information for other passengers and witnesses and photographs of the crash scene. These pieces of information can prove invaluable later and help corroborate your account of the incident."
