New York Personal Injury Lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm Discusses Food Safety During Cruises
New York, N.Y (PRWEB) February 24, 2014 -- The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported two norovirus outbreaks on board cruise ships just in January. According to CDC's web site the first one occurred on the Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas where 634 of 3,071 passengers were infected with the virus. In the Caribbean Princess cruise ship, 181 out of 3,201 passengers were infected. CDC reported that all victims of the outbreak suffered symptoms of gastrointestinal illness with the predominant symptoms being vomiting and diarrhea. Both ships had to cut short their cruises and return to land as a result of the outbreaks.
According to the CDC, norovirus is a contagious virus that causes an estimated annual number of 19 million to 21 million illnesses, contributes to 56,000 to 71,000 hospitalizations and 570 to 800 deaths. CDC reports that norovirus is the most common cause of foodborne-disease outbreaks in the United States. The virus causes the stomach or intestines or both to get inflamed, which in turn leads to symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea and vomiting.
"A food-borne illness outbreak can spread very quickly especially in a cruise ship where space is confined," says New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm "These types of illnesses are largely preventable, but when they do occur they cause acute pain and discomfort to the victims."
Here are a few steps cruise ship passengers can take to stay healthy during their dream vacation:
- Check your ship's outbreak record and inspection scores before you commit to your trip. The best sources for this information are the CDC's Summary of Sanitation Inspections of International Cruise Ships and records from its inspection program available on the agency's web site, cdc.gov.
- Steer clear of the buffets as much as possible.
- Do not eat any on-shore catered food. If possible, buy your own food.
- Try to avoid shrimp and other seafood served on board.
- Wash your hands as often as possible, especially after using the toilet and before preparing or eating food.
