New York Personal Injury Lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm Reacts to Fatal Queens House Fire
New York, N.Y (PRWEB) January 27, 2014 -- A house fire in East Elmhurst proved fatal for a 7-year-old boy and left his older brother with second-degree burn injuries. According to a Jan. 1 news report in The Queens Courier, the fire started in a home on 90th Street near 31st Avenue when sparks from an open fireplace ignited a pile of blankets and pillows placed close by.
The fireplace did not have a spark screen and there were no working smoke detectors in the house, the Queens Courier article stated. According to the report, the 7-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene and his 13-year-old brother was transported to a local hospital for treatment of burn injuries. One adult family member also suffered smoke inhalation injuries and three firefighters suffered minor injuries, the article states.
With intense cold weather gripping much of the United States especially the northeast, it is important for everyone to exercise extreme caution while using a fireplace or any house-heating device, said New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm. "All homes should be equipped with smoke detectors and sprinklers and these devices must be properly inspected at regular intervals to ensure that they are in good working condition."
Wilhelm offers a number of tips for winter heating safety:
• Do not leave flammable materials near your fireplace.
• Make sure that you have a metal mesh screen covering your fireplace, if you do not have a glass fireplace door. Chimneys should be covered with a mesh screen spark arrester.
• Put out the fireplace fire before you leave your home.
• It is important to ensure that you have smoke alarms on every level of your home, especially inside and outside sleeping areas. Test them monthly and change batteries at least once a year.
