New York Personal Injury Lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm Talks about Recent Fatality at Busy Manhattan Intersection
New York, N.Y (PRWEB) January 31, 2014 -- A 9-year-old boy was killed and his father injured after a taxicab hit them as they were crossing a Manhattan street the night of Jan. 10. Based on a Jan. 12 NBC New York article, the incident occurred at the intersection of West End Avenue and 97th Street. The boy and his 51-year-old father were both struck by a turning taxi, but the child died from his injuries, the article states. The report also states that City Comptroller Scott Stringer has called on the Department of Transportation to take action on recommendations made after last November's traffic study on the area, which he hopes will help prevent future tragedies.
According to the New York City Department of Transportation, pedestrians are 10 times more likely to die than a vehicle occupant in the event of a crash. Here are some more highlights from the DOT report:
• Pedestrians accounted for 52 percent of traffic fatalities from 2005 to 2009
• Driver inattention was cited in nearly 36 percent of crashes resulting in fatal or serious injury pedestrian crashes.
• 27 percent of fatal pedestrian crashes involved the driver's failure to yield.
• Manhattan has four times as many pedestrians killed or severely injured per mile of street compared to the other four boroughs.
• 43 percent of pedestrians killed in Manhattan lived in other boroughs or outside New York City.
Pedestrian accidents often result in major injuries to the victims, said New York personal injury lawyer Kenneth A. Wilhelm. "Collisions involving pedestrians can cause catastrophic injuries such as brain damage, spinal cord trauma and multiple fractures."
Busy intersections in various boroughs especially Manhattan can be tricky for pedestrians, Wilhelm says. "Pedestrians should take every possible precaution to ensure that they are visible and can see approaching traffic. Drivers for their part should observe the posted speed limit and yield right-of-way to pedestrians."
