New York, N.Y (PRWEB) January 28, 2014 -- The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has asked child safety seat manufacturer Combi USA to recall about 33,000 defective seats because the restraining straps in these products could break during a car crash. According to a Jan. 3 article in The New York Times, NHTSA officials rejected Combi's request not to recall the products because their failure to meet the federal safety standard did not have a bearing on vehicle safety.
The article states that government inspectors detected the strap failures during a spot check test in 2012 for compliance to federal safety standards. When the straps failed during testing, the agency contacted Combi about issuing the recall, the Times reports. The company argued that its own tests showed no strap failures, but government officials rejected those arguments and handed down its mandate for a recall, the report states.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), child restraint systems are often used incorrectly. One CDC study found that 72 percent of nearly 3,500 observed car and booster seats were misused in a way that could increase a child's risk of injury during a crash. The CDC also reports that child safety seats reduce the risk of death in passenger cars by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers ages 1 to 4 years of age.
"When you buy a child car seat, it is critical that you read the instructions carefully and install it correctly," Wilhelm says. "Your child's safety could depend on it. There are several local organizations that demonstrate how to properly install your child's car seat. It would be in parents' best interests to make use of these community resources."
