A website's speed matters. Research shows that a one-second page load delay negatively impacts page views, customer satisfaction, and conversions. Conversely, reducing page load speed can increase revenue and conversion numbers. Essentially, a faster website is better. So, follow these tips to improve website speed:

  •      Curtail HTTP requests by reducing the number of elements on each webpage. Every time there's a request for an on-page component, page load speed is impacted. The more elements on a webpage, the more time that page takes to load. Reducing load speed is can be achieved by reducing the number of elements on a webpage, using CSS instead of images, and placing scripts at the bottom of the page.
  •      Compress large pages. Large pages are naturally slow to load. Zipping these pages, or compressing them, reduces load time. Tools are available to compress files before they are downloaded. Since most Internet users use browsers that support compression tools, zipping large pages is an excellent way to optimize a website's speed.
  •      Assess images for speed. Though images add a necessary aesthetic appeal to websites, they can also slow them down. Shrink images to the smallest possible size or resize them to the width of the webpage to reduce their impact on website speed. Also, make sure all images are formatted as JPEGs or PNGs. Avoid BMPs and TIFFs.
  •      Make the fold (the top of the page) serve an advantage. If there's no way around a certain load speed, take advantage of a website's fold. Split the CSS in two so that content above the fold loads faster. Visitors will interpret the page to have loaded quickly because they can only see what's above the fold. This buys the rest of the content on the page time to finish loading without impacting user experience.
