The CBS New York report said the 3-foot-wide saw blade came loose while construction crews were cutting asphalt at Ninth Avenue and 48th Street. Witnesses told CBS the saw blade was sent 100 feet into the air, bouncing off a tree and narrowly missing a number of pedestrians before striking a 43-year-old woman in the leg.
According to CBS New York, construction crews had been working on this stretch of Ninth Avenue for two years. The site’s contractor has been directed to stop using all saws until equipment is inspected and confirmed to be in proper working condition by the city’s Department of Design and Construction, the article stated.
“While the cause of this accident remains under investigation, it’s important for all construction companies to take necessary safety precautions to prevent accidents,” Romano explained. “This responsibility is shared by all contractors, foremen and laborers.
