NewsWhip Inc. Announces the Issuance of a New Patent on Its Social Velocity Methodology
(PRWEB) June 22, 2016 -- NewsWhip’s globally-used Social Velocity methodology - a way of signaling which content, news or events are gaining importance in real-time, on the Internet and Social Web - has been recognized as unique and proprietary by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Having set out to help media and marketing professionals find the most important information anywhere online in real-time, NewsWhip founders Andrew Mullaney and Paul Quigley invented their Social Velocity methodology as a novel solution. They discovered that the rate of sharing of content was an indicator of growing attention and importance, tapping into the editorial decisions of billions of social media users around the World. As all interactions are not equal (a Facebook like is less commitment for a user than a Facebook share), different interactions are weighted differently through a Social Velocity algorithm designed to detect maximum engagement.
After capturing content quickly – immediately after publication – NewsWhip’s Social Velocity scores can also predict how big each story is going to become. The system is extremely effective at predicting major stories and audience interest, and is used in over 300 newsrooms, brand and agencies to detect important stories and help guide editorial and marketing decisions. The system earned additional validation in 2014, when the Irish Center for High End Computing ran a month long test on NewsWhip data and found that NewsWhip’s Social Velocity formula could predict 79% of major viral stories.
Today, via this patented Social Velocity methodology, any NewsWhip user can see the rising or falling rate at which content is collecting social engagements in any niche in 60 languages. It’s a live, continuously updating view of what’s engaging the world right now, and where attention is headed next.
Comments from the founders:
“It just seemed such a waste. Millions of people sharing news online each day and giving little signals of where the most important stories are. And meanwhile editors sitting in newsrooms just guessing what their audiences might care about. We’re really glad to have devised a system that can track all of those signals and give newsrooms the insight they need. Today we have a technology that’s far beyond anything we initially envisaged.” - Paul Quigley, Founder and CEO, NewsWhip.
“Social Velocity is the ultimate way to find a needle in a haystack – when the haystack is billions of social interactions. We were glad to find a way to show the content people are engaging with at this very moment, without a bias to total interactions and potentially stale, older content.” - Andrew Mullaney, Founder and CTO, NewsWhip.
