NeXt Doc Workshop Provides Intensive Training to New Generation of Filmmakers
Rensselaerville, N.Y. (PRWEB) April 19, 2016 -- Young documentary filmmakers from across the country will sharpen their skills and share their work at NeXt Doc, a weekend-long intensive workshop collaboratively organized by and the Carey Institute for Global Good.
NeXt Doc will take place Thursday, May 12 to Sunday, May 15 on the Carey Institute’s 100-acre historic estate in the Helderberg Hilltowns. The four-day workshop will feature master classes, formal workshops and breakout sessions intended to cultivate the next generation of nonfiction visual storytellers. As the audience for feature-length documentary films grows, youth education in the field is imperative to progress the genre and ensure its continued success.
“With NeXt Doc our goal is to bring together youth documentary filmmakers from around the country and connect them with some incredible award-winning producers,” said Bhawin Suchak, program director of Youth FX. “We want them to leave inspired and ready to take their work to the next level.”
Award-winning documentary filmmakers Samuel D. Pollard (“4 Little Girls,” “When The Levees Broke,” “Slavery By Another Name”); Iva Radivojevic (“Evaporating Borders”); and Tom Jennings (producer of PBS’s “Frontline”) will provide instruction and mentorship to the diverse group of 16 filmmakers aged 17 to 22 selected to participate.
From concept, to interviewing and reporting, to filming and editing, to marketing and distribution, documentary filmmakers are required to take on multiple roles at the intersection of art, journalism and business. NeXt Doc introduces the next generation of documentary filmmakers to the world of nonfiction storytelling by connecting students with professional producer-directors.
“A large part of documentary filmmaking is building relationships: relationships with images, relationships with protagonists, and collaborators … and that also includes circling back and sharing knowledge with the next generation of storytellers,” said Iva Radivojevic. “I'm excited to share, in the same way others have shared with me in the past.”
In addition to working with students, this year's presenting filmmakers have generously agreed to host public screenings and Q&A sessions. Sam Pollard’s “Two Trains Runnin’” will be screened Friday, May 13 at 7 pm at the Carey Institute. The film explores the search for two forgotten blues singers, set in Mississippi during the height of the civil rights movement. “Evaporating Borders,” Iva Radivojevic’s award-winning film about the experience of asylum seekers in Cyprus, will be shown on Saturday, May 14 at 7 pm. Both events will be followed by Q&A sessions with the filmmakers.

Youth FX is an award-winning program designed to introduce young people aged 14-19 to the technical and creative aspects of digital filmmaking by offering a thorough overview of the production process from script to screen. Based in the South End of Albany, NY, Youth FX focuses on visual storytelling, artistic expression and performance, with participants creating digital film projects in various genres, including documentary, narrative short fiction and public service announcements. Youth FX participants work with experienced media instructors, filmmakers and artists to learn the various aspects of digital video production such as cinematography, editing, sound and lighting.
