Nine Leading Producers From Campania, Southern Italy’s Most Exciting Wine Region, To Showcase In New York City
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 20, 2015 -- This week, nine of Campania’s most exciting wine producers will come to New York to showcase their wines in a series of events targeted to trade, press and consumers. Long overshadowed by other Italian regions, Campania is now at the forefront of the wine industry, producing a diverse array of wines from established wineries. In addition to a long-standing reputation for powerful reds, critics are now giving over-due acclaim to the region’s indigenous whites such as Falanghina and Greco di Tufo.
For press and trade, the tasting events will be held at Il Gattopardo in New York City (http://www.ilgattopardonyc.com) on Wednesday, July 22nd with a lunch seminar from 12:00pm — 1:30pm, followed by an importer “meet and greet” from 2pm-5pm for producers seeking representation, and to conclude the day’s activities, an aperitif walk-around tasting from 6pm-8pm. The seminar will be hosted Master Sommelier Fred Dexheimer and feature one wine from each producer paired with a seasonal, Neopolitan menu from Il Gattopardo. For the general public, there will be a pizza and wine party at Ribalta (http://www.ribaltapizzarestaurant.com) on Tuesday, July 21st from 6:30pm-9:30pm. The sold out event will give consumers the opportunity to explore wines from throughout the region, paired with traditional Neopolitan style pizza.
Campania is located in Southern Italy along the Tyrrhenian Sea, anchored by Naples, the region’s capital. Like many Italian regions, Campania is home to an impressive array of grape varietals, including both noble and native grapes. Winemaking has been a prominent practice in this region since the 12th century B.C., making Campania one of Italy’s oldest wine producing regions. The most notable grapes from this region are Aglianico, Fiano, Falanghina, and Greco. Leading global wine critics including Eric Asimov, Will Lyons and Ian D’Agata have recently taken notice of Campanian varietals such as Falanghina and Aglianico, emphasizing the complex history and varied expressions of the grapes.
Participating wineries who are currently available in the US are: Donnachiara, specialists in Falanghina and Taurasi located in Avellino; Tenuta Cavalier Pepe, known for producing a local cultivar named Ravece; and Cantine di Marzo, one of Italy’s oldest wineries and the first producers of Greco di Tufo. The other six wineries are seeking representation: Cantine Rao, Contea de Altavilla, Cantine Macchie Santa Maria, Tenuta Scuotto, Tenute Bianchino and Terre di Valter.
