Nizoral Attorneys at Gilman Law LLP Are Investigating New FDA-Released Safety Concerns Surrounding Nizoral
Boston, MA (PRWEB) July 29, 2013 -- Nizoral (ketoconazole) is a broad-spectrum oral medication for treating fungal infections of the skin and nails that is manufactured by Johnson & Johnson. Nizoral works by blocking an enzyme that is a key component of the fungal cell membrane. This blocking action weakens the structure of the cell and destroys the fungus. Nizoral comes in oral tablets and topical formulations (shampoos, creams, etc.); only the oral forms of Nizoral have been restricted.

The FDA now warns that Nizoral can cause serious hepatotoxicity (liver damage), including cases of death or liver transplant. Further, taking the following drugs with ketoconazole is contraindicated: Dofetilide, Quinidine, Pimozide, and Cisapride. Ketoconazole can cause elevated concentrations of these drugs in the bloodstream, resulting in changes in the electrical activity of your heart called QT prolongation. QT prolongation can cause irregular heart beats that can be life threatening. Nizoral can also cause the kidneys’ adrenal glands to stop producing sufficient corticosteroid hormones.

The FDA reports that during 2012 alone, approximately 5.2 million Nizoral (ketoconazole) prescriptions were dispensed, of which 609,000 (12%) were for the tablet formulation.

Contact your health care professional if you are taking Nizoral tablets for any non-life threatening infection, or if you are unsure, or if you have liver or adrenal problems. Be aware of these signs and symptoms of liver problems, which you may or may not experience:
• Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal discomfort
• Fever, feeling unwell, or unusual tiredness
• Yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes (jaundice)
• Unusual darkening of the urine or lightening of the stools
• Pain or discomfort in the right upper abdomen, where the liver is located
