NOMAS, HAVEN and UpRoot to Host The 38th National Conference on Men and Masculinities
Detroit, MI (PRWEB) July 31, 2013 -- The National Organization for Men Against Sexism (NOMAS), Haven Oakland, and UpRoot will hold the 38th National Conference on Men and Masculinities at the Double Tree by Hilton-Fort Shelby in Detroit, MI on August 8th-10th 2013. The conference theme this year, titled "Forging Justice: Creating Safe, Equal and Accountable Communities," will address gender-based violence as a social justice issue.
NOMAS believes that traditional roles of masculinity contribute to the institutionalization of gender-inequality. Such defined roles embody the assumption of male superiority, which can lead to sexual harassment, street harassment, domestic violence, homophobia as well as many other examples of gender-based discrimination and violence. “By creating awareness about the negative impact socially defined masculine roles impose on men, and the effect those oppressive roles have on not only men but women, we can begin to see the correlation between those roles, sexism, homophobia and the victimization caused by those roles. We created the conference to help educate people in all professions and walks of life on the importance of making systemic oppression a social justice issue,” said Moshe Rozdzial, co-chair of NOMAS.
The conference will provide a safe environment in which such delicate topics can be discussed and resources for victims, as well as allies, will be made available on a variety of different topics, through the presentation of the plenary sessions and workshops. Such plenary topics will include: "Feminism and New Media"; "Intersecting Identities and Gender-Based Violence"; and the “Connection between HIV Infections and Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)” which will be sponsored by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).
The Men’s Studies Association will also be holding their 25th Annual Meeting at the conference. Topic presentations for the annual meeting will include: “What Can be Learned by Court Assisted Child Murder Cases” by Barry Goldstein, J.D.; “Understanding and Promoting Positive Fathering: The Wayne State University Early Parenting Study” by Carolyn Joy Dayton, MSW, Ph.D.; and “A Third Way: A Comparison of Western Conceptualization of Gender 'Disorder' and of Native and Asian Conceptions of Third and Fourth Genders”, by Paul Landen, Ph.D.
The 38th National Conference on Men and Masculinities will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton-Fort Shelby in Detroit, MI on August 8th-10th 2013. Ticket prices are based on a sliding scale of $175- $400. The base price for an individual is $175. The conference is open to the public. Women of Color, LGBTQIA people of color, students, persons under 21, and residents of the City of Detroit will be given priority for the reduced priced conference tickets.
