Nonprofit organization, DOROT, hosts 39th Annual Spring Benefit
New York, NY (PRWEB) June 14, 2015 -- Over 260 people attended DOROT’s 39th Annual Spring Benefit on June 4, 2016 honoring Lainie Kaye and Brett Kaplan and Lainie’s parents, Rita and Phil Kaye. The Benefit, held at the Museum of the City of New York, raised over $530,000 to support the thousands of older New Yorkers that DOROT serves each year. This is the most raised since 2007 at this annual event.
Paula Resnick, past president and close friend of the Kaye/Kaplan family, led the tribute. Rita Kaye, in her acceptance remarks, commented “Reaching a ripe old age in relatively good health is something we all hope to attain… But if you live alone with no family or close friends, it can be a very sad and lonely existence. And that is where DOROT steps in.” She also spoke of her experience volunteering each year with Phil at DOROT’s Annual Thanksgiving Banquet, “we are probably older than most of the guests, but as long as we can carry a tray, we will be there!”
Along with Lainie and Brett and their sons, Rita and Phil Kaye have volunteered at DOROT’s Annual Thanksgiving Banquet every year since moving to Manhattan.
Lainie Kaye is a Managing Director at Deutsche Bank. Brett Kaplan is the Head of Origination at LoanCore Capital. Lainie served on DOROT’s Board of Directors for nine years, has volunteered as a friendly visitor, and has worked to improve DOROT’s corporate giving program. Lainie shared her experience as a friendly visitor with the guests at the Benefit, “One of the most rewarding experiences for me at DOROT was becoming a friendly visitor to Ida Glezer, a widowed Holocaust survivor from Vilna, who was an art dealer, an art historian as well as an accomplished linguist speaking 9 languages. However, she was now alone without children or other family. We clicked immediately. We went to exhibits and concerts together and she became part of our family, spending holidays and birthdays with us over the years. We spoke daily and I still miss her.”
During the program, the graduating high school seniors of Next Generation, DOROT’s teen leadership program, were recognized individually by Executive Director Mark Meridy and given gifts to commemorate their time volunteering for the organization. Leora Nevins, President of Next Generation, spoke about the value of working with the elderly. DOROT offers many intergenerational programs for teens and youth throughout the year.
Guests were entertained by Kaskeset, SUNY Binghamton’s Hillel-based a capella group.
