Nora Hewitt, a Graduate of Tom Savini's Special Make-up Effects Program, Wins "Face Off"
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (PRWEB) October 29, 2015 -- Nora Hewitt graduated from the Tom Savini Special Make-Up Effects Program at Douglas Education Center in Monessen, PA on a Friday.
"I was on a plane the next day to go out to California to do the show," she said.
The "show," of course, is SyFy Network's "Face Off." And the trip turns out to be well worth the effort.
On Tuesday night, Hewitt, living in Clairton, won Season 9 of the popular make-up reality show in front a celebratory crowd of family, friends, colleagues, instructors and school administrators including world-renowned special effects make-up artist and mentor Tom Savini.

"For me to come right out of school and go right to 'Face Off,' it was beyond intimidating," said Hewitt, 25. "I was like, 'Oh my God, I am so over my head.'
"Everything turned out fine, but 'nervous' is an understatement."
And turned out fine indeed. Hewitt will receive a $100,000 award, a 2015 Fiat 500 and a career-launching supply of make-up from Krylon.
Hewitt was one of three Savini graduates that competed in Season 9 including fellow finalist Evan Hedges of Denver and Ricky Vitus of New York.
Savini graduates appearing on each season of SyFy's "Face Off" has become a regular occurrence. To date, 21 graduates have competed on the make-up effects show. The skills and techniques they learned at Douglas Education Center have helped them succeed on the series and launch meaningful careers.
Hewitt met the final challenge as each contestant had to create three characters and shoot a short video of their story in Episode 14, "Movie Magic."
"It was intimidating to me, but at the end of the day, raw talent is raw talent," Hewitt said. "Art has always been my biggest outlet and my biggest passion, and as far as them having experience? Well, I'll get that eventually."
