North Carolina Distracted Driving Accident Lawyer Richard Flexner Comments on Texting Survey
Wilmington, NC (PRWEB) December 27, 2013 -- Commenting on a survey released by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, Wilmington, NC distracted driving accident lawyer Richard Flexner of the Law Offices of Richard Flexner said he was not surprised to learn that adult drivers may be more likely than teens to use their phones or send text messages while behind the wheel.
The survey (“Teens Report Texting or Using Phone While Driving Significantly Less Often than Adults”), released by the AAA on December 11, indicates that drivers ages 25-39 were much more likely to use their phones regularly while behind the wheel than teenage drivers. Nearly half of all drivers ages 25-39 reported “frequent” cellphone use behind the wheel and engaging in behaviors such as texting while driving.
“I’ve seen many cases in my office involving distracted older drivers,” said Flexner. “Some people wrongly assume that teen drivers are the ones doing all the texting and driving. It’s both encouraging news, and a testament to nationwide drivers’ education efforts, that fewer teenage drivers are reporting to have engaged in risky behaviors such as texting and driving.”
Flexner said the survey suggests that more efforts are needed to educate all drivers about the dangerous of using cellphones behind the wheel.
According to the AAA survey, 43 percent of adult drivers ages 25-39 and 30 percent of drivers age 40-59 reported using their phone “fairly often” or regularly while driving, compared to only 20 percent of teens. Furthermore, the AAA survey found that while texting and driving rates remained high across all age groups, 45 percent of drivers age 25-39 reported texting and driving, compared to 31 percent of teen drivers.
Despite the survey results, the AAA reported that that nearly nine-in-ten drivers believe distracted driving to be a bigger problem now than it was three years ago and that 96 percent of drivers believe that texting drivers are a serious threat. One out of every ten fatal crashes involves distracted driving, according to the AAA, resulting in roughly 3,000 deaths across the country each year.
“This recent survey indicates that while most drivers acknowledge the risk of cell phone use – and especially texting – behind the wheel, drivers continue to do so on a regular basis in North Carolina and throughout the United States,” said Flexner, a Wilmington, NC distracted driving accident attorney. “All it can take is a split second of driver inattention to cause a serious accident in North Carolina.”
