North Carolina Retirement Communities Welcome Tommy Dorsey Orchestra
(PRWEB) October 25, 2014 -- In Big Band history, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra is recognized as one of the best all-around dance bands. It could swing with the best of them, and no other band could come close to Dorsey's when it came to playing ballads. Tommy Dorsey, "The Sentimental Gentleman of Swing," was a master at creating warm, sentimental, and always musical moods – at superb dancing and listening tempos. Dorsey sustained these moods through the arrangements of the likes of Paul Weston, Axel Stordahl and Sy Oliver, and he showcased singers who could project them brilliantly. They take the stage on Tuesday, October 28 at 7pm on the campus of Abernethy Laurels in Newton, NC and again on Thursday, October 29 at 2pm on the campus of Piedmont Crossing in Thomasville, NC.
Dorsey was a giant in the Big Band Era of the 1930s and ‘40s. His orchestra was considered among the best dance bands, generating a string of 17 No. 1 hits. Frank Sinatra became a superstar as vocalist for the band, and prominent musicians including drummer Buddy Rich and trumpeter Doc Severinsen played with the band at one time or another.
Currently, the 19 member ensemble continues to play many of the original Dorsey big band arrangements, as well as some more modern selections arranged and performed in the Dorsey style and sound.
Abernethy Laurels resident Jeanne Swartz is among the many residents at these two retirement communities that are thrilled about having Tommy Dorsey Orchestra perform. "This style of music takes me back to my younger years," laughed Swartz. "We are all looking forward to reminiscing and dancing the evening away," said Swartz, whose late husband was a trumpet player in the Al Ceechi 15-piece orchestra that is known throughout Western New York for their big band style of music.
