North Shore Eye Care Chosen To Launch New LASIK Technology Delivering A Higher Quality of Vision
Smithtown, New York (PRWEB) July 23, 2015 -- Global vision care leader, Abbot Medical Optics, Inc. (AMO) has selected North Shore Eye Care to launch its new iDesign LASIK system developed to offer patients a wider range of treatment options and the potential to achieve better than 20/20 vision, according to Long Island eye surgeon Jeffrey L. Martin, MD, Managing Partner of North Shore Eye Care.
During the past 20 years, LASIK technology has undergone numerous improvements, but Dr. Martin feels the iDesign Wavescan Studio System is one of the most significant. “Our new iDesign system now allows North Shore Eye Care to even further improve the results we’re achieving with our Custom iLASIK procedure in terms of the percentage of patients who achieve 20/20 or better,” said Dr. Martin. “This breakthrough diagnostic tool ushers in new era in our ability to fully optimize patient outcomes and treat a much broader range of patients who may not have previously been an ideal candidate for LASIK.”
LASIK is considered the safest, most successful and popular method of vision correction ever developed. More than 20 million people worldwide have had their nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism corrected with LASIK. It is a two-step process that involves making a micro incision on the outer surface of the eye called a cornea. This tiny protective flap (about the thickness of a contact lens) is then lifted, allowing surgeons to treat the inner layer of the cornea with an Excimer laser. The protective flap is then gently replaced allowing the eye to heal quickly and naturally.
Dr. Martin explains the iDesign system as the ‘Brain Power’ behind the popular iLASIK procedure. “The iDesign system allows us to perform five key high-definition diagnostic measurements in one capture sequence,” he said. These critical measurements include Wavefront aberrometry, Wavefront refraction, Corneal topography, Keratometry and Pupillometry. “This information is then seamlessly integrated into the Star S4 IR Excimer laser to provide our patients a custom LASIK procedure that is unique as their fingerprint and DNA.”
In explaining the difference between standard LASIK and custom LASIK, Dr. Martin pointed out that standard LASIK is based on nomograms developed by monitoring thousands of patients with similar prescriptions undergoing LASIK. He said with custom LASIK, advanced diagnostics are used to develop a custom wavescan - or fingerprint of your eye - that is as unique as a person’s DNA. This wavescan is then used to perform Custom LASIK.
“The initial results AMO achieved in their iDesign studies were quite impressive,” said Dr. Martin. “Six months after iLASIK, 99% of patients reported significant improvements in all measures of quality of vision and visual function. In fact, the majority of study participants achieved 20/16 or better visual acuity.”
“The key to achieving the best possible result with our iLASIK procedure is the depth in which we are able to diagnose and measure visual imperfections during the pre-operative stage of the LASIK process,” said Dr. Martin. “The more imperfections we can diagnose pre-operatively, the more we can treat during LASIK surgery. Now that we have the capability to capture the entire wavefront in our LASIK patients, we can translate that to the patient’s treatment plan and results. That’s why the vast majority of patients report a higher quality of vision with iLASIK than they could see with either glasses or contacts.”
Additional benefits of the iDesign system is that is allows surgeons like Dr. Martin to treat a much broader range of patients who were not ideal LASIK candidates in the past. “With iDesign, we can now treat a much higher range of Astigmatism and we can treat patients as young as 18 years of age,” he said. “This opens up the benefits of LASIK to hundreds of thousands of men and women across the country who may have been told by their eye doctor that were not an ideal candidate for LASIK.”
North Shore Eye Care is among the first 20 practices in the United States to offer LASIK patients the benefits of the iDesign system. “My partners and I at North Shore Eye Care are very proud to be chosen by AMO as an exclusive member of their launch team,” said Dr. Martin. “We are constantly focused on next-generation LASIK technology that will improve patient outcomes and look forward to helping iDesign set a new standard of vision correction.”
