Novel Underscores Struggles of an African-American Gay Man
WASHINGTON (PRWEB) December 14, 2017 -- Maurice W. Dorsey brings forth a fictional narrative of his life and the struggles he had to endure while growing up as an unwanted child and being an African-American gay man. In “From Whence We Come” (published by Xlibris), Dorsey is personified by the fictitious character named Seymour Rose. He was born to a father who is Catholic and accepts his son unconditionally and a mother who is born Methodist and is homophobic – but most of all, she tells her son throughout his life that she never wanted to have him.
In the story, Seymour reflects on three generations of his family history and often tells family stories to make sense of his years of emotional insecurity and feelings of being unloved and unwanted. As the readers flip through the pages of the book, they will witness how he struggles with coming to peace within himself as a result of journeying through a dysfunctional family structure, the African-American experience and conflicting religious values. In the end, he comes to terms with his mother and his family history, and achieve happiness and peace.
“This book is relevant today because gay men and women still struggle to find a fair and equal justice in the American Society. When you layer this with the Catholic Church and being African American too, it is a damn struggle,” says Dorsey on his book’s relevance in today’s society.
With the book, Dorsey wishes to remind everyone that no matter how tough life can get, “you can come to acceptance, find resolution and happiness when you chose happiness.”

About the Author
Maurice W. Dorsey is the author of “Businessman First, Remembering Henry G. Parks, Jr.1916-1989 Capturing the Life of a Businessman Who Was African American A Biography.” He is retired from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture. He has worked in both the public and private sectors finding his ultimate career in education. He earned a Bachelor of Science in family and consumer sciences from the University of Maryland College Park, 1970, a master’s degree in liberal studies from the Johns Hopkins University, 1975 and a second master’s degree in education from Loyola University of Maryland, 1976 and returned to the University of Maryland College Park and earned a doctorate of philosophy, 1983. “From Whence We Come” is his second book. He is gay and resides in Washington, D.C.
