November is American Diabetes Month
Columbia, SC (PRWEB) November 22, 2013 -- As November is American Diabetes Month, Audiology Services wanted to share some information about how diabetes can affect hearing loss. Audiology Services will also offer complimentary counseling for diabetic patients experiencing hearing loss until Nov. 30.
According to the American Diabetes Association website, "26 million people in the U.S. have diabetes and an estimated 34.5 million have some type of hearing loss." The same association says that these are "two of America's most widespread health concerns.” According to the audiologist at Audiology Services, no one is sure why the diabetic patient is more likely to have hearing loss. However, this is well documented and the American Diabetes Association acknowledges that hearing loss is "twice as common in people with diabetes" than in those without diabetes.
The staff at Audiology Services says that effective counseling is even more important for diabetic patients with hearing loss than for those patients who have hearing loss but are not diabetic. Diabetic patients are often surprised to be told that their hearing loss may be due to their diabetes and that because of diabetes, their hearing loss may worsen.
Until Nov. 30, in recognizing National Diabetes Month, Audiology Services is offering free counseling for those patients who are diabetic and have hearing loss or are concerned about the possibility of developing hearing loss. Free screening for hearing loss will be included where necessary.
All are welcome to call the Audiology Services office for further information and for scheduling, 803-714-3373.
