A strong link-building strategy can increase a site’s popularity, while search engines like Google can penalize a site if it is made up of paid links from irrelevant sites.

In an effort to rank higher, many firms upload large amounts of content to their site. However, as Reuter explains, publishing information that is not relevant or original can hurt a site’s online ranking. That’s because search engines reward sites that provide information users find helpful. By publishing relevant and reliable information, smaller brands can become an authority in their field, which, in turn, can build trust and increase traffic and backlinks. When creating content, it’s important to keep the needs of the customers in mind.

"Over time, brands update their websites, which can change the internal structure. If they aren’t careful, this can create a broken link, which means clickable text no longer directs users to its intended destination," Reuter adds. "While this can be a nuisance to users, search engines don‘t like them, either. That’s because bad links can translate into a bad reputation, and Google downgrades sites that contain a large number of internal issues."
