NYC Economic Development Corp., NYS Smart Grid Consortium, & More to Gather in NYC this Month to Address Climate Change and Resiliency in Wake of Philippines Disaster
New York, NY (PRWEB) November 18, 2013 -- Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines and parts of Vietnam and China just last week, is being documented as one of the most powerful storms on record, shedding even more light on the need to address climate change and infrastructure resiliency. The disaster, which has affected as many as 11 million people and left a potential death toll of 10,000 civilians, has left 90% of the region in calamity, with no food, water or power supply independent of military aid. As the nation begins the struggle to adapt and rebuild, the commitment to take action on energy security and long-term resiliency is becoming even more imminent around the globe.
Much of the resiliency equation rests on a reliable grid system and a transactive power generation model. This means investing in smarter, cleaner, more efficient methods of power generation, in the form of smart grids, microgrids, distributed renewable generation, energy storage, and grid optimization, in order to create smart cities that are resilient and functional even in times of crisis. As President Obama said in his “Act on Climate” speech this past June, “Our progress will be measured in crises averted, in planet preserved."
On November 21st, AGRION will host a roundtable discussion in New York City to examine the key tools and conditions required to progress towards energy and infrastructure resiliency in the smart city. With speakers from NYS Smart Grid Consortium, NYC Economic Development Corp., Petra Solar, Hodgson Russ and New York University’s School of Law, the panel and audience will engage in an interactive conversation on developing infrastructures that support both stability and sustainability in cities around the world.
