BEST COMMERCIAL INTERIOR FEATURE
Entertainment Cruises’ Spirit of Boston luxury yacht embarked on an ambitious $2.5 million ship transformation in January 2015 to deliver all-weather solutions to match the ship’s seasonal offerings. Seeking a one-stop solution for lavish stone materials the partnered with O&G, one of the Northeast’s leading providers of earth-based construction services and products. Cooley worked closely with O&G’s masonry division and fabrication experts, counting on O&G for natural stone products, custom stone fabrication, and onsite know-how for the new stone structures of four bars, back bars & end panels from bar to floor, soffit's, shelves, wait station counters, an outdoor bar, with 4” miter laminated eased edge detail and three men’s, women’s & handicap bathroom vanities, . "The finished product and services delivered by O&G is outstanding and better than I could have imagined,” commented Andrew Cooley, Principal of Cooley Marine Management. “The new bars are now a focal point of the entire project."
BEST POOL HOUSE—WASHINGTON, THE BARN HOUSE ESTATE
In a variation on the more traditional treatment of the main house addition elements, the pool house demonstrates a more contemporary rendition of timber frame construction and includes an exposed concrete floor with recessed LED up-lighting, a galvanized spiral stair, a reclaimed timber and full-glass catwalk, and two facades of fully-opening NanaWall glass wall panels. The second floor guest suite features floor-to-ceiling glazing with views across the meadows, to the paddocks and tennis pergola beyond.
BEST RESIDENTIAL REMODEL $3-5 MILLION—WASHINGTON, THE BARN HOUSE ESTATE
The original house was 5,000 S/F and 3-bedroom house sits on 33-acres. The addition consisted of a 5,000 S/F timber frame addition and freestanding pool house with stone, glass, and reclaimed siding facades. The estate grew to a 10,000 S/F, 7-bedroom home for a growing blended family. The primary features of the new work consist of an exposed hemlock timber frame, custom steel windows set in walls of reclaimed barn siding, an open sculptural stair constructed of steel, glass, and reclaimed timber. A custom fabricated limestone fireplace surround and limestone feature wall that accentuates views across the new expansive terraces, outdoor kitchen and pool area to the meadows and horse paddocks beyond. Approximately 1,000 S/F of the existing home was renovated to provide a new wine cellar and bar, formal dining room, mud room, guest bath, laundry and pantry. The existing structure also received new exterior paint and Marvin windows.
BEST OUTDOOR ROOM / LIVING ENVIRONMENT—WASHINGTON, THE BARN HOUSE ESTATE
Seating, dining and relaxation spaces of the 16’ x 42’ pergola structures consists of 8 3’x3’ stone piers bridged with hemlock timbers matching those of the timber frames in the house above. The floor of the pergola is made of flagstone with grass filling the gaps between the stones. The firepit is positioned near the pergola, which was created from irregular flagging and firebrick. An opening in the stone wall at the back of the pergola revels two stone staircases that descend to a new 60’x120’ tennis court sunken into the hillside. With a strict mandate of hiding the lines and surface of the tennis court from all views from the house and terraces, the court was sunken a total of 9’ below the upper grade and ringed with local stone walls capped with reclaimed bluestone slabs. Provisions were made in curb details and drainage for flooding the court in the winter for ice-skating and other winter sports. Two floating bluestone benches and a fountain made from a reclaimed catch basin add interest and meet functional requirements for summer refreshment and changing into skates in the winter. A new grotto underneath the stairways, enclosed with a custom studded-timber door, provides functional storage for both tennis and winter sports.
