Oaks Christian Online Counselor Attends Harvard Summer Institute on College Admission
Westlake Village, CA (PRWEB) June 28, 2014 -- Cyndy Locke, Director of College Counseling for Oaks Christian Online (OCO) High School, represents the online high school's college-preparatory program at the Harvard Summer Institute on College Admission, held June 22-27 this year. The institute is an annual program organized jointly by Harvard University and The College Board and has been held in Boston for the past 55 years. A nationally-recognized faculty of outstanding leaders in the field including the deans of admission of the nation's most prestigious universities offer more than forty sessions and are available for consultation and discussion. This year's institute is being attended by 194 individuals who serve as counselors in the high school setting, college admission offices and community-based organizations from all over the country and in thirteen foreign countries. Sessions during the week include topics such as letters of recommendation, developing an effective college counseling program, financial aid, admissions to selective private, public and military academies, athletic recruiting and essay writing as well as big picture perspectives on the future changing demographics of college attendance and Supreme Court rulings regarding college admissions. The activities also included touring Harvard University. Oaks Christian Online high school is one of two online schools attending this year’s conference.
OCO has built a comprehensive, college-preparatory college counseling program for its full-time, online students and has an impressive 100% four-year university acceptance for its graduates over the past three years. After working on the Oaks Christian School campus for eight years, Cyndy Locke has developed the comprehensive program to mirror the best practices of the main campus. All grade levels of online students participate in a yearly counseling course, attend virtual college visits, attend live college tours and college fairs and participate in more than sixteen online college counseling events. To prepare for next year’s program, Mrs. Locke has also visited Tufts University, Boston College, Brandeis University, Bentley University, Wellesley College, Babson College, Olin School of Engineering, Northeastern University and Boston University while in the Boston area. Mrs. Locke says, “I feel privileged to have attended this prestigious event and am really looking forward to sharing all we have learned this week with our top-level students at Oaks.”
