October Headliners Announced for the Nationally Acclaimed Biscuits and Blues

Syl Johnson kicks off the beginning of the month with two soulful blues-filled nights on Oct. 3 and 4. Johnson is famous for some of the most touching and soulful music ever; songs like "Concrete Reservation" and "Is It Because I'm Black." He has been part of the Chicago blues scene from the beginning, playing and associating himself with some of the top blues people of all time. Shun Ng, his opening act, is an acclaimed international performer known for his unique style of guitar playing that infuses elements of funk, blues and jazz.
The “Original Stray Cat” Lee Rocker rocks the house on Friday, Oct. 10. Rocker made his mark singing, playing, standing on, spinning and rocking his giant upright bass in the legendary music group The Stray Cats. Rocker is considered "one of the most influential bass players in the history of rock and roll.”
Saturday, Oct. 11, Café R&B hits the stage for a fun-filled night of rhythm and blues. Imagine Etta James riding a Harley out of an active volcano to have some vague inkling as to the vocal power emanating from 'Roach,' the front woman of L.A. Roach’s soprano can ascend in a heartbeat without sacrificing accuracy or nuance.
Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers brings that rag time jazz and blues back to the Bay Area on Friday, Oct. 17. The San Francisco-based group is a notable exception to the retro-swing norm. The saucy vocalist and her eight-piece crew actually know the difference between jump music and bland R&B in corny suits.
“The hottest southpaw in the blues” Coco Montoya uses his master touch and killer tone to create two fantastic shows on Saturday, Oct. 18. Montoya is a self-taught guitar slinger who plays with an emotional intensity few string benders possess. Playing left-handed and upside down like Albert King, Montoya learned his guitar techniques from his years with Albert Collins.
On Wednesday, Oct. 22, JW Jones celebrates the release of his new CD “Belmont Boulevard.” Canadian singer/guitarist Jones tours constantly and is known for his high-energy show that keeps getting hotter. Jones’ style is a fluid amalgam of T-Bone Walker’s big, bright chords, Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson’s slashing leads and Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown’s jazzy sting.
Dave Specter brings his lifelong-honed Chicago-style blues to the fair city on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 23 and 24. Specter has earned an international reputation as one of the premier talents on the Chicago blues scene. Since 1985, Specter has performed regularly at top Chicago blues and jazz clubs, in addition to festivals and concert halls throughout the USA.
On Saturday, Oct. 25, the fantastically soulful Earl Thomas will tear up the stage of Biscuits and Blues. Thomas’ passion and raw talent emanate from the stage, which lights up with energy and charisma, each time he performs. The Earl Thomas shows sell out quickly! Reservations are highly recommended.
Oakland’s own Fantastic Negrito bears his heart and soul on the stage on Sunday, Oct. 26. Fantastic Negrito is the story of a man who struggled to “make it,” who “got it,” and who lost it all. For anyone who ever felt like it was over yet hoped it wasn’t, this is your music; blues harnessed, forged in realness.
On Halloween, Friday, Oct. 31, the vocal powerhouse Terrie Odabi is the MC for the long celebrated spooky holiday. Odabi is easily the most dynamic blues and soul woman to have emerged in the Bay Area since Etta James came out of San Francisco’s Fillmore District in the Fifties. Terrie has a powerful set of pipes, writes terrific tunes, leads a kicking band, and has onstage movements that perfectly match the rhythms of her material.
