October Marks Tyre Safety Month - ATS Euromaster Asks Are You Prepared?
(PRWEB UK) 24 September 2013 -- ATS Euromaster is calling on all drivers to act in October's Tyre Safety month.
In a bid to promote the importance of keeping tyres in top condition, the national tyre retailer supports TyreSafe's efforts and hopes other retailers will gather their free campaign materials.
TyreSafe are one of the UK's leading tyre safety organisations. They are dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of illegal or worn tyres.
Anita Ellis, Online Marketing Manager, says: “We cannot stress how important it is for drivers to properly maintain their tyres and ensure they are in good condition. Effective tyre maintenance is crucial; it can be the difference between stopping a vehicle and causing or being involved in an accident.”
ATS Euromaster hopes the initiative will encourage drivers to check their tyre pressure once a month going forward. Tyres that are under inflated are likely to overheat and over inflated tyres can lead to poor vehicle handling.
A 2011 report by Safe Motorways stated that 164 UK road deaths were caused by under-inflated car tyres. From November 2012, all new cars were fitted with pressure monitoring systems in a bid to alert the driver to any issues and reduce fatalities.
Tyres under-inflated by 15 psi (1 bar) will also have an increased rolling resistance which may lead to around six percent greater fuel consumption on each journey. Petrol and Diesel prices may have dipped recently according to a recent Government report; however, it's just not economical or safe to take your tyre pressure for granted.
“Driving with under-inflated tyres can create extra flex in the rubber and increase resistance, which generates heat and causes blow-outs. Tyre manufacturers attribute 75 percent of blow-outs to under inflation.”
“TyreSafe also found that more than half of all drivers were unable to correctly identify the legal tread depth and a baffling one in five drivers had never checked their tyres over,” continues Ellis.
The 'Lifesaver In Your Pocket' campaign by TyreSafe encourages drivers to insert a 20p into the grooves of the tyres to check the depth. A European Survey again conducted by Tyre Safe found that 28.4 percent of tyres were described as 'severely' or 'seriously' under-inflated.
“There's a real lack of awareness when it comes to looking after vehicle tyres. After all, the tyres are the only part of the vehicle that is in contact with the road surface; it's paramount that they are in a condition to perform properly,” concludes Ellis.
