Olympian Joey Mantia and World Champion Michael Cheek to Conduct an Indoor/Outdoor Inline Speed Skate Skills Clinic This Sunday May 18, 2014

Its an amazing, exciting and awe-inspiring sport that somehow completely hooks its members with its lifestyle. At this point, only ice inline is an Olympic sport. However, that doesn’t slow down the thousands of people around the world who love living in their helmets and unusual looking skates with the big wheels. This colorful sport appeals to all ages and gives an amazing calorie burn! Many skaters who have already raced to the top share their skills and experiences to encourage others to “skate faster and turn left!”
Joey Mantia of Ocala, FL first began competing in inline speed skating at the age of 8. By the age of 27 he had acquired 12 Junior World titles, 28 World titles, 3 Pan American titles, and broken six world records. Needing a new challenge, he made the transition to ice so that he could compete for the USA Olympic team. He succeeded and earned himself a place to compete in the 1000m, 1500m and Team Pursuit events at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. http://www.jmantia.com
Michael Cheek (known as “Cheex”), of Greensboro, NC is a very tall (6’ 4’’ without his skates on!) and humble man who has been skating professionally for the past 10 years. He has earned multiple National Championships, a spot on the National Speed Circuit and a World title. His brother is 2006 Olympic Gold medalist Joey Cheek who also - like Joey Mantia - made the switch from inline to ice to be able to compete in the Olympics.
The Piedmont Speed Club is one of America’s leading speed teams and is composed of skaters and coaches practicing in rinks in Concord, Greensboro and Hickory, NC. Together we have over 100 USARS registered members and compete in regional, national and international meets throughout the year. Our coaching staff and membership boasts multiple world and national champions as well as 25% of the skaters on the National Speed Circuit (http://www.pronsc.com).
The indoor portion of the clinic will take place 9am-1pm at Frye’s Roller Rink, 2800 Poplar Tent Road, Concord NC. Participation is $45 per person. Weather permitting, an outdoor portion will be held in the afternoon at a local track.
