Olympian Queen Harrison to Compete at NYRR Millrose Games in NYC
New York, NY (PRWEB) February 11, 2016 -- Olympic track and field champion, Queen Harrison is competing in the upcoming NYRR Millrose Games in NYC on Saturday February 20, 2016 and announces new endeavors.
Queen Harrison’s record of accomplishment is no slow walk in the park. The esteemed athlete won the 2010 NCAA Outdoor 100m and 400m hurdles to become the first woman to win both NCAA titles in the same year. She then qualified for the 2008 Olympic team as the youngest member at 19-years-old and was the first athlete from the Virginia Tech track and field program to compete. That same year, Harrison was named the recipient of the Bowerman award, which is given annually to the top collegiate track and field athlete.
Harrison is also currently a sought-after model for beauty and fashion companies. Known for her signature, vibrant colored lipstick on the track, she often writes articles featuring popular beauty and make-up tips for magazines and websites. At the same time, Queen is one of the faces of ASICS in their current commercial campaign and the inspiration for a soon-to-be-released “Queen inspired outfit”. She is also working on her upcoming lip cosmetic line and a book with a message of empowerment for teen girls.
Queen’s beauty and strength of character are well-known – on and off the track. The athlete’s upbringing was based upon self-determination, but she overcame many challenges to become a track and field icon. Her parents were incarcerated at any early age, and she battled abandonment and insecurity issues by focusing on academic excellence and athletic success. Now she channels her experiences into positive messaging to empower teenage girls and young adults.
“Participating in a sport or activity where medals or rewards supposedly validate worth, you can still find your own personal greatness,” says Queen. “The same lessons can be applied to the lives of young women, looking to find themselves. They shouldn’t need the approval of others – only themselves.”
Harrison is determined to use her platform as a role model to empower young women to embrace and use their gifts, passions and inner beauty to give back to the world. She works with Zumba Fitness to promote their classes, sharing positive messaging to encourage female empowerment through exercise. Another endeavor, her GoQueenGo sport camp teaches strategies to overcome self-esteem and body issues, while setting and achieving personal goals. Harrison’s upcoming SpeedQueen competition urges young women to share stories of other women who have “paid it forward” in their communities.
Rounding out a very busy schedule, Queen Harrison is now training to qualify for the 2016 Olympic team in the 100-meter hurdle event. In the words of Queen, “I’m in my prime and able to do things I didn’t even know I could. It’s time to take my place at the top of the podium.”
