4FRNT Skis co-owner Matt Sterbenz now has an Olympic gold medal and a national program held at Salt Lake Community College to help grow his business.

Athlete David Wise, who is also Sterbenz’s business partner, won a gold medal in the ski halfpipe this past week during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

“We have been getting a lot of calls,” said Joshua Moreland, marketing director for 4FRNT. “A number of people calling just to congratulate us. … They were excited about an American company, making skis in America, winning gold medals.”

While Wise has been winning in Sochi, Sterbenz has been using the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program at SLCC to hone his skills as a leader and improve the company, which with eight full-time employees designs and manufactures skis.

“He’s learning a lot about how to be a better leader,” Moreland said.

He said Sterbenz has already been a great leader within a “horizontal” structure where everyone is free to share opinions and insights. “It’s our passion,” said Moreland, who noted that all of the employees are skiers, some who get up at 4 a.m. to ski before going to work.

Wise grabbing the gold has compelled investment capital firms to call 4FRNT and people, who in years previous to the 2014 Winter Olympics didn’t know what went on inside, to stop in the 4FRNT shop for a look. Moreland said 2014-2015 projections for 4FRNT are a doubling of business, with Wise’s gold adding “legitimacy” to what 4FRNT products are capable of doing.

“If they can do that, what else can they do?” Moreland asked.
