ON World: $10.5 Billion Mobile Sensing Fitness Market in 2015
San Diego, California (PRWEB) April 22, 2015 -- Bluetooth Smart radios with mobile sensors will be in over a billion devices in the next five years, according to global technology research firm ON World. ON World’s recently published report covers the mobile sensing sports and fitness segment of this emerging ecosystem that will have $10.5 billion in annual revenues this year.
“Over $1 billion in venture funding, more than 600 products and expanding offerings from the mobile/IT industry promises to make 2015 the year of mobile sensing,” says Mareca Hater, ON World’s research director. “With standards based mobile sensing solutions becoming widespread due to the popularity of activity trackers and smartwatches, the market for mobile sensing devices supporting fitness apps will more than triple this year.”
Fitness is the most important app for wearables according to ON World’s 2015 consumer survey with 1,000+ U.S. consumers. The survey found that over half of likely wearable users would use their device for fitness. Interest in activity trackers is particularly strong and growing. Thirty-nine percent (39%) of likely wearable consumers are interested in activity trackers, 22% more than ON World’s previous survey in Q2 2014. Also, two in five of the respondents would pay $99 or more for a wearable tech device.
In 2014, activity trackers outsold general purpose smartwatches four to one. However, this market is undergoing a fundamental change due to the introduction of smartwatches. Over 5 million smartwatches shipped in 2014 that support sports and fitness apps and almost half were fitness-dedicated activity tracker/smartwatch hybrids including products by Fitbit, Garmin, Polar, Samsung and Microsoft. In five years, general purpose smartwatches that support fitness apps (e.g., Apple, LG, Lenovo/Motorola, Pebble and Samsung) will make up over 70% of the smartwatch market.
By the end of 2019, 1 billion mobile sensing devices that support sports and fitness will have been shipped worldwide.
ON World’s report, Mobile Sensing Sports & Fitness, covers the global market for mobile sensing systems for sports and fitness and forecasts 7 product segments including smartwatches, activity trackers, heart rate monitors, speed/cadence sensors and other performance monitors.
