OpenClinica Announces Clinical Partner to Improve Patient Safety
Waltham, MA (PRWEB) January 05, 2016 -- OpenClinica, LLC is pleased to announce a collaboration with Brigham and Women's (BWH) Patient Safety Learning Laboratory (PSLL) to implement applications that help improve safety reporting and response in the hospital in real time.
Safety risks occur at many points during a patient’s hospital stay. According to the World Health Organization:
Patient safety is a serious global public health issue. Estimates show that in developed countries as many as one in 10 patients is harmed while receiving hospital care. Of every hundred 100 hospitalized patients at any given time, 7 in developed and 10 in developing countries will acquire health care associated infections. Hundreds of millions of patients are affected by this worldwide each year.

Specifically, PSLL’s MySafeCare initiative is a mobile application that allows patients and their family members a quick, real time way to report and communicate safety concerns while they are in the hospital. The ability to capture patient perceived safety threats in real time and for use at an organizational level could have the potential to help mitigate risks before safety incidents occur, as well as promote a learning health system.
PSLL has designed and implemented MySafeCare using OpenClinica’s Participate™ platform. Participate allows researchers and health professionals to build user-friendly, interactive views and dashboards for patients and clinicians using mobile and web technology.
MySafeCare completed a successful pilot on the Intermediate Vascular Unit at BWH in the spring of 2015, and has expanded to additional clinical units this fall. Sarah Collins, RN PhD, Senior Clinical and Nurse Informatician at BWH and Harvard Medical School leads the MySafeCare project. The MySafeCare team was particularly attracted to Participate’s flexibility to align with their iterative user-centered design approach, mobile user experience, and ability to ensure data integrity. “Keeping patients safe is the Brigham’s #1 priority. MySafeCare helps us enhance patient safety by increasing our understanding of safety threats as patients experience them and partnering with patients to improve their care,” said Dr. Collins.
