Opera Camp: Opening Up New Musical Doors for Your Child
Bryn Mawr, PA (PRWEB) April 29, 2014 -- Would you like to introduce your children to the wonderful world of opera? Now’s your chance! The Philadelphia International Music Festival – a “sleep-away” summer music festival featuring members of the world-renowned Philadelphia Orchestra – has added to its summer camp programming, June 21 – July 4, Opera Camp – a program designed to introduce children as young as six years of age to the intriguing world of opera!
Under the direction of acclaimed opera director, Karen Salliant (artistic director and founder of the International Opera Theater) - beginner, intermediate and even seasoned young singers will receive voice, technique, and movement instruction, as well as individualized character study through a 13-day program housed on the exquisite grounds of Pennsylvania’s Bryn Mawr College, on Philadelphia’s prestigious Main Line.
Believing that all children can and should learn to sing, the Philadelphia International Music Festival and the International Opera Theater choose an opera that includes parts for the inexperienced singer as well as the seasoned performer. So, unlike most programs of its kind, there is no required entrance audition for Opera Camp. While openings remain, all applying students will be accepted.
Opera Camp students will be learning - and then performing on July 3 in Bryn Mawr’s newly renovated Goodhart Theatre - the historic children’s opera Brundibar, by Hans Krasa. And if that is not exciting enough - singers also who study orchestral or band instruments will be given the opportunity to take private lessons with members of The Philadelphia Orchestra and to rehearse with a chamber music group daily.
“Karen Saillant of the International Opera Theater knows how to teach even the youngest student to love music and enjoy performing,” said Sandy Marcucci, President of the Philadelphia International Music Festival. “And the addition of a children’s opera program to our camp schedule means that there is now a place for every child at PIMF!”
The program – open to both resident campers and local day-only participants - also includes off-campus outings to Philadelphia Orchestra concert(s) and the New Jersey boardwalk, as well as evening faculty and student concerts, and non-musical activities like “Movie Night,” a camp-wide talent show, and more.
