Operation Ward 57 Awarded Grant From The Home Depot Foundation
Tacoma, WA (PRWEB) November 27, 2014 -- Seattle/Tacoma-based organization, OPERATION WARD 57, has been selected as a 2014 Community Impact Grant recipient through The Home Depot Foundation. The $5,000 grant, along with services provided by The Home Depot’s associate-led volunteer force called Team Depot, will provide critical home repairs and maintenance for Army Staff Sgt. Sam Shockley, a wounded warrior who was critically injured when he stepped on an improvised explosive device while clearing roads for a personnel carrier in Afghanistan in 2013. The then 25-year-old lost parts of both of his legs and three fingers on his right hand.
Operation Ward 57 and its volunteers are incredibly proud and honored to have also partnered with Ken Frunz of Chinook Northwest, a Tacoma-based construction company, for the opportunity to assist this military family in need and provided a safe and accessible home in which to live.
Shockley, who is set to medically retire in December, will be returning with his wife to the Tacoma area after spending more than a year and a half recovering at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The much needed home repairs will make the transitional home and property more handicap accessible so that Shockley has a space to accommodate his needs while he waits for a brand new home to be built in the next couple years by Homes for Our Troops (HFOT), a privately funded 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that provides specially adapted, mortgage-free homes to severely wounded service members.
