Oral Contraceptive Pills Treat Endometriosis; New Low-Estrogen Oral Contraceptive Pill Samples Available Now at Women’s Excellence Near Clawson, Michigan
Clawson, Michigan (PRWEB) December 20, 2013 -- Endometriosis is a complicated disease requiring a multi-modal approach to treatment. Women with endometriosis often suffer with dysmenorrhea, painful menstrual periods. One of the first steps of therapy for dysmenorrhea, aside from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) therapy for pain management, is oral contraceptive (OC) therapy to control the menstrual cycle.
According to Debbie Henry, NP-C, nurse practitioner at Women’s Excellence in Endometriosis in Lake Orion, “We place women on OCP therapy for endometriosis to better control the estrogen effect on the menstrual cycle. We hope to limit the duration and severity of the menstrual period, thus reducing the associated pain with the menstrual period and the amount of bleeding.” Estrogen “fuels” endometriosis. It fortifies existing endometrial implants throughout the pelvic cavity causing further inflammation and pain. One popular theory on the cause of endometriosis is the “retrograde menstruation” theory. Retrograde menstruation refers to menstrual bleeding that essentially “backs up” into the woman’s fallopian tubes and is deposited into the pelvic cavity.
A normal immune system would typically “clean up” the endometrial material deposited into the pelvic cavity caused by retrograde menstruation. However, in the case of endometriosis, endometrial material is not properly removed by the immune system and is allowed to persist. Endometrial material adheres to organs and other structures in the pelvic cavity and is triggered by the fluctuation of hormones throughout the menstrual cycle causing inflammation and subsequent pain throughout the month.
Low-estrogen containing OCPs can also prevent further endometriosis from occurring after treatment with aggressive hormone therapy with GnRH agonists and robotic surgery. Dr. Jonathan Zaidan MD, founder and physician specialist at Women’s Excellence in Endometriosis states, “We start patients on a low estrogen form of contraception immediately after surgery to prevent the recurrence of endometriosis. There are many great options available and we routinely supply samples to our patients to try before we prescribe. We like to know for certain that the patient can tolerate and is happy with the method before they have to reach into their wallet to pay for it.”
