Orange County Auto Accident Lawyer John Rapillo Comments On Recent Report On 68 Percent Reduction In Teen Car Accidents In California
Orange County, CA (PRWEB) September 20, 2013 -- The number of fatal and injury auto accidents in California caused by 16-year-old drivers has dropped 68 percent since the state’s Graduated Driving Licensing law went into effect in 1998, a positive trend applauded by Orange County personal injury lawyer John Rapillo of the Law Offices of John Rapillo.
“Tough driving laws clearly seem to be making a difference in the number of serious auto accidents in California caused by teenagers,” Rapillo said today. “These figures are astounding. Clearly, teenagers seem to be getting the message that they need to be more careful on the road. It’s not just themselves that they put in danger. When teenagers cause serious accidents, everyone’s lives are put at risk. That’s why it’s critical that teenagers continue to learn about the dangers of driving so they don’t become another accident statistic.”
The report documenting the decline in the number of fatal and injury car accidents caused by teenage drivers in California was released by the Automobile Club of Southern California, according to Motor Trend, “Report: California Law Reduces Teen Crashes by 68 Percent” (Aug. 21, 2013). The same report also found that the crash rate for 17-year-old drivers decreased by 51 percent between 1998 and 2010, Motor Trend reported.
California’s Graduated Driver Licensing law requires teens to have an instruction permit for at least six months and complete 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours of supervised night driving, Motor Trend reported. Teens are also not allowed to drive between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. for the first year and they cannot transport passengers under the age of 20 for one year unless a licensed driver over the age of 25 is present, Motor Trend reported.
Unfortunately, fatal car accidents involving teenage drivers in California continue to occur. On Aug. 10, two teenagers died and three were injured in a San Jose, CA car crash involving a 19-year-old driver, according to the San Jose Mercury News, “2 teens die, 3 injured in San Jose crash” (Aug. 12, 2013). And earlier this year, five teenagers died in an auto accident in Newport Beach, CA involving a 17-year-old driver driving nearly 100 miles per hour when he lost control of the vehicle, according to the Los Angeles Times, “Teen driver in fatal O.C. crash may have been going 100 mph” (May 30, 2013).
Officials can never do enough to educate teenagers about the risks associated with driving, according to Orange County teenage auto accident lawyer John Rapillo of the Law Offices of John Rapillo.
“The message is clearly being communicated to teenagers about the dangers of driving, but there’s always more we can do,” Rapillo said. “All it takes is one wrong move by a teenage driver and the lives of many people and their families can be instantly changed forever. When serious or fatal auto accidents in California happen, it’s difficult to know what to do afterwards. That’s why we encourage families to contact us. We have years of experience handling such serious accidents. We can help you so you can focus on what truly matters: grieving the loss of loved one.”
