Osterman Research Survey Sponsored by Netmail Announces Preliminary Key Findings of Important “Healthcare Email Usage Survey” Launched at HIMSS 2014
Montreal, Canada (PRWEB) February 26, 2014 -- Netmail today announced the preliminary key findings of an important “Healthcare Email Usage Survey” launched at HIMSS 2014 and conducted by Osterman Research Inc. The research revealed that IT administrators in the healthcare industry face significant risks involving the transmission of sensitive and confidential data and the ability of malware to enter the organization through any number of different venues.
Like many other industries, IT administrators in healthcare are under enormous pressure to modernize their communication systems, enable mobility, and maintain high availability of critical applications like email, while at the same time maintaining compliance, security, and adhering to the strict rules and regulations governing patient data.
Some of the survey’s early findings indicate that:
• A significant number of healthcare-related organizations has deployed Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive (Skydrive) within its corporate network which may potentially be used as a way to send PHI independently of corporate policies.
• One out of five healthcare-focused organizations has not established any sort of anti-spam, anti-virus, data leak prevention (DLP), or encryption.
• More than one-third of healthcare-related organizations has not deployed a DLP solution to monitor outbound email for potential HIPAA/HITECH violations.
According to Michael Osterman, principal researcher at Osterman Research Inc, the survey also revealed that “Many healthcare organizations are providing an honest self-assessment of where they stand with regard to security. When asked to rate themselves on a scale of 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent) on how well they manage security for spam and malware protection, 43% of healthcare organizations surveyed rated themselves 3 or lower. Similiarly, 41% rated themselves 3 or lower for preventing data leaks, and 45% rated themselves 3 or lower with regard to managing secure file-sharing.”
