Dr. VerMilyea’s presentation focuses on the global proliferation of PGS services and the resulting need for competent IVF labs: “PGS: Preimplantation Genetic Screening or Pressure Group Success. Are you in or out?”
PGS enables fertility specialists to screen IVF embryos for chromosomal abnormalities. This type of screening is on the rise as a result of advances in cryopreservation and DNA mapping. Chromosomally abnormal embryos (aneuploid embryos) frequently cause early miscarriage in IVF cycles. PGS, however, allows IVF lab embryologists to screen for aneuploid embryos so that fertility specialists can recommend transferring only those likely to develop into healthy babies.
Ability to grow blastocyst stage embryos essential to PGS capabilities
Dr. VerMilyea plans to use his presentation to emphasize the need for IVF lab competency in PGS. He will stress that IVF labs must provide the optimal environment in which to nurture embryos to the blastocyst stage, while developing guidelines to select the best embryos for biopsy and establishing strong cryopreservation programs.
