Owens Corning Announces First Environmental Product Declaration for Foam Insulation in North America
Toledo, OH (PRWEB) December 19, 2013 -- Continuing its commitment to product transparency and sustainability in the building industry, Owens Corning (NYSE:OC) announces a UL-certified Environmental Product Declaration (EPDs) for its FOAMULAR® Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Insulation.
An industry-first in North America for XPS rigid foam insulation, the EPD describes the environmental impact of the products based upon an established set of product category rules and independently verified life cycle assessment (LCA) data from cradle-to-grave. The assessment of a product’s environmental impact includes parameters such as raw materials extraction, transportation, manufacturing, packaging, use and disposal at end of life.
In addition, Owens Corning provided life cycle data on its Thermafiber® Mineral Wool Insulation along with other mineral wool manufacturers to NAIMA. The data helped NAIMA develop a North American industry-wide EPD for light and heavy density mineral wool insulation that was issued at Greenbuild 2013.
“The EPD for our FOAMULAR® XPS and prior publishings for fiberglass insulation reflect our sustainability industry leadership and pledge to be transparent about our products’ environmental performance and impact,” said Gale Tedhams, director of sustainability for Owens Corning. “EPDs help architects, designers, specifiers, and other purchasers make more informed sustainable purchasing decisions and meet industry standards, including the recently launched LEED version 4 rating system.”
Last year, Owens Corning set the bar with the first UL-certified fiberglass building insulation EPDs in North America for the company’s Unfaced and Kraft-Faced EcoTouch® PINK® FIBERGLAS™ Insulation with PureFiber® Technology and Unbonded LooseFill Insulation.
“Our portfolio of insulation EPDs is a testament to our commitment to meeting the needs of the building industry to achieve higher performing homes and buildings that are energy efficient, comfortable, durable and sustainable,” said Tedhams. “Insulation is a key contributor to a building’s overall energy-efficiency, helping to reduce the energy required to maintain a comfortable living or work environment.”
