Parathyroid Expert Babak Larian, MD, FACS, Reveals Innovative Methods to Diagnose Hyperparathyroidism in Patients
Beverly Hills, CA (PRWEB) January 09, 2014 -- A recent article reveals that diagnosing hyperparathyroidism may be difficult for a doctor without extensive knowledge and experience with parathyroid disease. At the CENTER for Advanced Parathyroid Surgery in Los Angeles, parathyroid expert Dr. Larian has years of training and experience to accurately diagnose hyperparathyroidism in order to provide patients with the most effective treatment plan.
“Hyperparathyroidism can be difficult to diagnose due to its subtle and gradual symptoms. In fact, if the patient is not tested correctly, many symptoms of hyperparathyroidism are attributed to a different condition. This delay in accurate diagnosis can lead to further complications,” explained Dr. Larian.
There are five main tests that should be performed on patients who are showing signs and symptoms of hyperparathyroidism: blood calcium and parathyroid hormone levels, Vitamin D levels, magnesium and phosphorus levels, basic chemistry and creatinine function, and a 24 hour urine calcium test. Dr. Larian uses these advanced tests in order to detect abnormalities in the body caused by an overactive parathyroid gland. There are four additional tests that can be performed in order to evaluate the impact of hyperparathyroidism on the body or determine another cause.
“An accurate diagnosis is the first crucial step towards treating hyperparathyroidism. The disease will not go away on its own, and can lead to further medical complications if left untreated. Patients who suspect they have hyperparathyroidism should seek immediate medical attention from a qualified physician,” stated Dr. Larian.
Hyperparathyroidism is caused when the parathyroid gland becomes overactive and produces too much parathyroid hormone. The parathyroid hormone is responsible for monitoring the levels of calcium in the body and when the parathyroid glands overproduce the parathyroid hormone it leads to high levels of calcium. Eventually, this will take a physical toll on the body. Most overactive parathyroid glands are caused by a benign tumor.
“Once hyperparathyroidism is properly diagnosed, we can treat it by removing the parathyroid tumor that is causing the gland to overproduce the parathyroid hormone. Using the most innovative procedures, we can perform minimally invasive parathyroid surgery to remove the parathyroid tumor with minimal pain, scarring, and recovery time,” said Dr. Larian.
