Parcel2Go CEO Puts Forward Views on Royal Mail Privatisation
Manchester, UK (PRWEB UK) 24 July 2013 -- The chief executive of online parcel delivery firm Parcel2Go has suggested that Royal Mail parcel prices could rise further if government ministers press ahead with plans to privatise the postal service.
At the start of July, business secretary Vince Cable confirmed that a majority stake in Royal Mail would be sold off through a public offering. He described the move as "logical" and a "commercial decision designed to put Royal Mail's future onto a long term sustainable basis". Mr Cable said the six-day, universal service would be protected.
However, James Greenbury, chief executive of online parcel delivery specialist Parcel2Go, has told The Economist that he believes the six-day delivery service will be outdated and redundant in 10 years' time. The growth of competitor companies and the vast range of low-cost domestic and international parcel delivery services available through courier companies will continue to have a major impact on the business.
In a separate interview with mail and logistics news website Post & Parcel, Mr Greenbury said he expects prices to rise at Royal Mail if the government's privatisation bid is successful, especially if the move results in strike action by members of the Communication Workers Union.
He said: "In order to get Royal Mail in shape to be privatised, the management team has tended to increase their pricing.
"A couple of years ago it was stamp prices, then there was a huge shake up this April in parcel prices. For something like a medium parcel, which tends to be the category for a lot of e-commerce parcels, towards the lightweight end of the market the prices virtually doubled.
"It's pushed a lot of people on eBay and Amazon marketplace to look for an alternative," he added.
