Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon Prepares Portland for the 2016 World Parkinson Congress
Portland, Ore. (PRWEB) September 02, 2016 -- With over 4,000 international Parkinson’s delegates expected to visit the city of Portland Sept. 20-23 for the 2016 World Parkinson Congress, local area non-profit Parkinson's Resources of Oregon (PRO) is unveiling a series of Parkinson’s Ready training's for the Portland Police Department, Legacy Health Systems, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) at Portland International Airport and area hotels such as the Hilton Hotel located in downtown Portland. The training's and video webinars will help educate organizations focused on serving the public better understand that patients with Parkinson’s may react slowly, show confusion at times, have slurred speech or experience mobility problems.
The 4th triennial World Parkinson Congress, offers an exciting opportunity for people with Parkinson’s and their care partners to meet alongside healthcare professionals, research scientists, pharmaceutical industry representatives, staff of nonprofit agencies, and government representatives. The world class event spans four days at the Oregon Convention Center and will include guest speakers from 60 countries.
Together with the local organizing team, Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon has designed a Parkinson’s awareness training that provides a high-level overview of Parkinson’s disease and symptoms, supported with practical and concrete tips for common or anticipated situations. PRO’s training lasts 60 minutes and includes one staff member from OHSU or Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon paired with a person living with Parkinson’s disease. Dedicated to serving individuals in Oregon and Southwest Washington who lives have been touched in some way by Parkinson's disease, Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon is a proud sponsor of the 2016 World Parkinson Congress.
Dr. Richard Rosenbaum MD, a neurologist, who specializes in Parkinson’s disease for The Portland Parkinson’s Program of Legacy Health Systems and The Oregon Clinic and who is also a board member of Parkinson’s Resources of Oregon, will be conducting in person trainings for medical staff and emergency department personnel along with his colleague Dr. Kieran Tuck at Legacy Emanuel and Good Samaritan Medical Centers. He has also spoken to the staff of Legacy Go Health Urgent Care, whose closest office to the Convention Center is on N. Williams Ave. in Portland. “We hope that this extra effort training local Legacy Health Systems personnel isn’t necessary during the Congress, but we want our staff to be prepared for the special needs of people with Parkinson’s,” said Dr. Richard Rosenbaum. “The two closest hospitals to the event are part of the Legacy Health System network, so as a member of the Local Planning Committee,I volunteered myself and my colleagues to provide training and grand rounds in the weeks preceding the 2016 World Parkinson Congress.”
At the WPC, Dr. Rosenbaum and colleagues from Legacy and from the National College of Natural Medicine will be presenting a poster about their research on treating Parkinson’s disease with a ketogenic diet.
The 4th World Parkinson Congress (WPC) will take place in Portland, Oregon this year bringing over 4,000 attendees from around the world to the City of Roses. In addition to four days of meetings and workshops, WPC includes an art show, music, dance program and exhibit hall. According to Travel Portland, the Congress is expected to bring an economic impact of $5.1 million to the City of Portland.
