In this vain, Pathways is happy to announce that they are now offering genetic testing. For those unfamiliar with genetic testing, it is a test that allows them to look at how an individual’s body metabolizes drugs. This is beneficial because it allows people who are on prescription medications such as anti-depressants or anti-psychotics to see exactly how their body processes and metabolizes these drugs.
All too often, doctors prescribe drugs based on what the pharmaceutical companies are paying them to push instead of what’s best for their patients. This is where genetic testing comes in; by knowing how the patient’s body metabolizes and processes certain drugs, it allows them and their doctor to openly discuss and decide which medication is best for them.
If a patient requires anti-depressants, their body may metabolize these at a very different rate than the other people who are taking this drug. This means that while the instructions tell them to take a pill every 8 hours, their body may take only 4 hours to metabolize that drug, and therefore going 4 hours without their much needed medication. Conversely, someone with a slower metabolic rate for that drug may take 12 hours to process and are essentially doubling up on their medication when taking it at the recommended intervals.
