Patients File Lawsuits Over Da Vinci Robotic Surgery System
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) September 27, 2013 -- The number of lawsuits filed against Intuitive Surgery, makers of the da Vinci Robot Surgical System, is rising. Patients have filed product liability suits claiming injuries due to hazards of the robot; Intuitive Surgery's own shareholders have filed suits claiming that Intuitive Surgery failed to disclose information to them about safety concerns, and minimized reports of serious complications. At least 33 complaints have been filed so far, according to a recent filing with the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC).
Adding to growing safety concerns are recent discoveries that issues with the da Vinci Robot Surgical System have been underreported. More than one-million surgeries have used the robot since 2000, but only 245 complications have been reported, including 71 deaths. Further investigation revealed that many complications were only reported after media coverage of the incident, and some complications were not reported at all. "I think we're going to see a lot more lawsuits regarding the da Vinci Robot Surgical System, as patients learn they are not alone," said Joshua S. Parilman, Esq.
Da Vinci Robot Surgical System is the only FDA approved robot for soft tissue surgeries, such as prostatectomies and hysterectomies. Gynecological surgeries are the most dangerous, accounting for 22 out of 71 deaths according to the findings in the Journal of Healthcare Quality. Hysterectomies account for 43% of all non-death complications. The overall complication rate of all da Vinci Surgical System surgeries is 8.8 percent. The price of robotic surgery often lands between $2,000 and $2,500 more than standard surgeries.
"We are up to the challenge of helping patients seek justice for complications resulting in the da Vinci Robot's failed promise of a better surgery," said Parilman, Esq. While fighting liability law suits can be a difficult road for patients to navigate, Parilman and Associates have helped many people seek reparations for medical bills, complications, and pain and suffering resulting from unsafe procedures like da Vinci Robotic Surgical System surgeries.
There are many challenges ahead as investigators uncover more information about the safety of the da Vinci Robot Surgical System and more victims come forward to seek justice.
