Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art Celebrates Silver Anniversary
Pawleys Island,SC (PRWEB) February 26, 2015 -- The 25th Annual Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art is scheduled for September 25-October 17, and this year’s event promises to be one of the best on record.
From its humble beginnings with a single performance of “Eine Kleine Nachtmusick” (A Little Night Music), the Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art has evolved into an annual three-week regional celebration of the arts. This year, the event will celebrate its silver anniversary with a spectacular 2015 season. A week has been added to the Festival to accommodate additional performances, including two headliners, which will make it a month long celebration, September 25 through October 17th.
While the details are not confirmed for this year’s Festival performances, the event has attracted some notable performers in past years. Grammy award-winning jazz legend Chuck Mangione, The Manhattan Transfer, Delbert McClinton, Branford Marsalis and the famed jazz fusion band Spyro Gyra are just a few of the musical talents that have graced the stages of the Pawleys Island Festival of Music and Art.
Music is not the only art form honored by the Festival. Dance performances, including the nationally acclaimed Richmond Ballet, and children’s theater and film showings, are among the other artistic representations. Throughout the years new event traditions have been added including “Chalk Under the Oaks”, led in its initial year by famed chalk artist, Lee Jones. This event gives the community a chance to learn and participate in the lost Italian tradition of “street painting’. Other recent additions are The Seaside Palette, a two-day plein air painting exhibition demonstrating the talents of over 50 Lowcountry artists, and The Lowcountry Garden Party that was established in 2014 as a fundraiser to support the visual arts as well as the performing arts component of the Festival.
The passionate volunteers and organizations that work hard to make the Pawleys Island Festival of Music & Art one of South Carolina’s most recognized events, have formed lasting relationships. A true friendship was formed between former board chairman, Fred Newby, and Festival founder, the late Dr. Lee Minton, who succumbed to cancer in 2002. Gretchen Downer, PIFMA’s current president is quite certain that Dr. Minton would be proud of what the Festival has become. Strand Media Group, who manages the Festival, and Marketing Strategies Advertising & PR, who promotes the event, enjoy a partnership formed over seven years ago. They are united in their desire to make the Festival a true celebration and to see it evolve and grow for the enrichment of future generations of South Carolinians.
