The Fort Worth police department was one of five chosen by the U.S. Department of Justice to participate in a new pilot program. The focus of the program, the National Initiative for Building Trust and Justice, is analyzing how these departments interact with their respective communities. “I think it can only be a positive if the goal is to advance the relations between police officers and the community,” says Paul Schuder, owner of PCS Bail Bonds. “If you look across the entire country right now, that relationship appears strained in some communities and it’s leading to some tension.”
Schuder explains that the tension comes following a year in which officers made what many considered questionable decisions in regards to the alleged shootings of unarmed civilians who were considered threats. Cases of this occurring include Ferguson, Atlanta, and Forth Worth’s home state of Texas. However, some Fort Worth residents are more open to the idea than others. One resident said they “don’t trust the police,” and “don’t know what it’s going to take,” to change their mind, while another had a more positive outlook, stating if police just knew how to talk to citizens, it would solve a lot of problems. “It’s a subject that needs to be addressed and the Department of Justice Department appears to be hoping to make some strides with this initiative,” Schuder concludes. “Fort Worth residents haven’t always had the best relationship with police officers, so this is an opportunity for both groups to take some steps to come together. Because at the end of the day, police are here to protect and serve and they need residents to help them do their jobs more effectively, and that takes trust.”
