Peerlyst Users Can Test Security Resilience
San Francisco, California (PRWEB) February 13, 2015 -- Peerlyst announced a new initiative that will provide the security professionals who make up the Peerlyst community access to Ixia’s BreakingPoint Virtual Edition (VE) software solution to test security products. Peerlyst will provide BreakingPoint VE to Peerlyst users who commit to sharing how their products performed in the tests they conduct, so that others can learn from their experiences.
The program advances Peerlyst’s core mission: providing a platform where the security community can share knowledge and benefit from colleagues’ insight and expertise. Peerlyst makes its members’ jobs easier by giving them a place to find and compare security solutions—and learn from peers’ real‐world experiences.
Ixia is enabling the program with its newly released BreakingPoint VE, which provides enterprise IT departments with the same sophisticated testing environment that security vendors, leading service providers, and large enterprises use to ensure network security resilience, but now in an elastic, virtualized platform without requiring purpose-built hardware. Community members who agree to share test results via Peerlyst will have access to a BreakingPoint Virtual Edition license for up to four weeks.
“Investing in new security technology can be a long and complicated process,” said Peerlyst CEO and founder Limor Elbaz. “Ixia BreakingPoint VE is one way we can offer our community of IT professionals and experts vendor-neutral information, helping them make the right technology choices for their organization.”
Testing: The Best Security Protection
“Being proactive about security is not just about investing in more products that claim to offer proactive security; it’s about investing in the right ones for individual environments,” Elbaz observed. “No one product performs the same in every environment so the best way to be proactive is to put your security solutions to the test as much as you can.”
Testing is one thing, but reporting on the results of that test is another. “When you let your Peerlyst colleagues know how a product you’re using fared in the BreakingPoint testing, you’re helping the security community,” Elbaz said. “You’re letting your peers better understand the product’s strengths and weaknesses—and showing the vendor where it has some more work to do. Sharing your experience may result in the vendor helping you improve the product’s performance in your environment, since sometimes the issue is simply how you’re using the product. If it’s more than that, vendors may make improvements to their solution—and in the meantime, suggest other ways you can better protect yourself.”
She added, “You’re not putting your own enterprise at risk by disclosing the results of your test on Peerlyst, since you call the shots. You report the results in your own words, disclosing as much or as little as you want. I’d advise the members of our community not to worry about exposing a security weakness, since people know you probably tested your product on a separate network—and nobody will assume that a particular product is your only line of defense.”
Don Shin, Ixia’s senior product marketing manager, says Ixia looks forward to helping the Peerlyst community promote stronger network defenses. "Security resilience testing delivers quantifiable data that takes the guesswork out of investing in new technologies and infrastructures,” Shin said. “In virtualizing the BreakingPoint solution, we’re hoping to make it easier and more standard for IT professionals to conduct the testing needed to ensure security resilience.”
