PENETRON Technology Keeps ‘Em Trucking on the 101
East Setauket, New York (PRWEB) January 04, 2016 -- PENETRON crystalline technology delivered the necessary durability and waterproofing performance for the concrete used in the walls and drainage system of the new Morro do Formigão tunnel in Tubarão. Brazil’s recently inaugurated tunnel in Santa Caterina State provides much-needed additional capacity for heavy truck traffic on the BR-101 highway.
The BR-101 highway is a major north-south axis for the country’s transportation network. The highway is 4,500 km (2,800 miles) long, crossing 12 states from the north to the south of Brazil. The Morro do Formigão tunnel is located in the southern part of the highway and is a key link between Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay.
“In Brazil, over 60% of all goods are transported by truck,” explains Claudio Neves Ourives, Director General of PENETRON Brazil. “The Morro do Formigão tunnel is a showcase project for PENETRON technology.”
The Morro do Formigão tunnel is part of a large construction project, carried out by the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT), to expand the capacity of the BR-101 highway. As one of the major works in progress in the southern section of BR-101, the tunnel project is 900 meters (2,950 feet) long, including 530 meters (1,740 feet) of excavated gallery and 370 meters (1,210 feet) of access structures. The newly completed tunnel has two dual lanes, a wide shoulder, and fire safety systems.
Part of the new Morro do Formigão tunnel follows a different track, which had to be dug before any concrete could be poured. The tunnel was executed using the NATM process and wet shotcrete was used for the structural coating. To enhance the impermeability of the concrete tunnel walls and the drainage system against water penetration, over 16 tons of PENETRON ADMIX was mixed into the concrete at the ready-mix plant.
“The new tunnel demanded a proven waterproofing solution that would also provide the durability needed to withstand the constant heavy traffic found in this section of the BR-101 highway,” adds Jozef Van Beeck, Director, International Sales & Marketing, The PENETRON Group. “The larger tunnel can now better accommodate the increased truck traffic on a key highway that connects both the south and north of Brazil with markets in Argentina and Uruguay.”
